The benefits of plants against seasonal depression

Tuesday November 29th, 2022, 3:24 PM

Winter is now well established in Montreal, with the first snowfall on November 16th. The days are getting shorter and the evenings are getting colder, which is enough to make many people depressed.

Recently, the seasonal affective disorder - which would seriously affect 5% of the population and more slightly between 10 and 20% - has been officially recognized by psychologists. The decrease in brightness affects our morale and even our organism, which can cause many inconveniences such as insomnia, loss of energy, isolation, among others.

THE BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF PLANTS

Several natural remedies have been discovered to face this phenomenon, including plants. Indeed, the presence of plants at home or in the workplace has multiple benefits on our health, both mental and physical.

For example, incorporating plants in classrooms would significantly increase students' grades; and their presence in corporate workspaces would decrease absenteeism and improve the feeling of well-being.

THE THERAPEUTIC POWER OF PLANTS

The virtues of plants are both physical and psychological.

Indeed, they filter the air of its impurities, increase the oxygen rate, reduce background noise, and especially, decrease stress.

If you like to pamper them, the soil of plants has microbes that, when touched, activate the release of serotonin and dopamine in the brain, which are two anti-stress neurotransmitters.
