Celebrating International Bicycle Day: A Sustainable Pathway to Health and Mobility

Saturday June 3rd, 2023, 12:00 AM

June 3 is International Bicycle Day!

Regular physical activity of moderate intensity, such as walking, cycling or playing a sport, is good for your health. At any age, the benefits of exercise outweigh the potential risks of accidents, for example. Any physical activity is better than no exercise at all. Recommended activity levels can easily be reached by increasing activity levels throughout the day.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), safer infrastructure for walking and cycling is one way of ensuring health equity. Indeed, for poorer urban communities, walking and cycling are more economical ways of getting around. When encouraged, they can also have significant health benefits, reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, diabetes and even death.

Addressing the needs of people who walk and cycle remains an essential part of the mobility solution to help cities decouple population growth from rising emissions, and to improve air quality and road safety. The COVID-19 pandemic has also led many cities to rethink their transport systems.

Bicycles and sustainable development

World Bicycle Day draws attention to the benefits of cycling - a simple, affordable, clean and environmentally-friendly means of sustainable transport. Cycling contributes to cleaner air and less traffic congestion, and makes education, healthcare and other social services more accessible to the most vulnerable populations.

A sustainable transport system that promotes economic growth, reduces inequalities and helps combat climate change is essential to achieving the goals of sustainable development.

The Halte 24-7 is located close to a number of cycle paths, which means that many members and visitors can get here by bike and park in the designated area right outside our doors.
